Lonely beach
A beach hike from Morro Jable/Jandia to Costa Calma is a great experience. By walking along the coast, you get to know all beach sections of the peninsula of Jandia, even those which you can't reach by car or bus.
In order to go hiking on the beach you should be a good walker. The distance from Morro Jable to Costa Calma is approx. 17 km along the beach, thus the hike is not to be sneezed at. You also have to consider that you walk along the shore, i.e. the position is always slightly "wonky" and sometimes your feet sink down into the sand. If you don't have leg or hip problems you can easily do this beach hike.
You should allow a whole day for the hike. We recommend that you start at 9 am at the latest in order not to be pressed for time. Of course, the duration of the hike depends on your fitness, on the tides and on the number of rests. Nevertheless you should allow at least 5 to 6 hours plus approx. 1 hour for the bus ride back (including the waiting for the bus).
Important! Pay attention to the tides!
Basically you can do this beach hike also at high tide. But it's possible that you have to climb up hill and down dale. If you prefer walking along the beach you should start approx. 1 hour before low tide.
On your route you walk along the beach sections "Butihondo" and "Esquinzo", where there are already small beach bars where you can eat something if you'd like to have a first rest.
The next beach is "Mal Nombre" with its stone castles. Here is also a beach bar where you can take a break. Sometimes you meet small "companions". These little chipmunks are happy if you give them a piece of bread or the like.
Then you slowly approach the looked-for "Sotavento beach". This lagoon which is constantly changing slightly is one of the highlights of the beach hike. Now you have to decide if you walk along the sea front (not advisable when it's very windy) or if you walk along the back of the beach. The lagoon is larger as it seems. First you pass Rene Egli's wind surfing school, then the Hotel Gorriones and then Rene Egli's kite surfing school. If you walk along the sea front you can take a closer look at the wind and kite surfers. Here are also some beach bars where you can have a rest.
One kilometer behind the kite surfing school there are the first hotels of Costa Calma. After another kilometer, you have reached the "main" beach of Costa Calma. Congratulations!!!
Attention: If you take the bus you have to walk another kilometer to the bus stop.
By bus:
The bus connection between Costa Calma and Morro Jable is good. Buses nos 1, 4, 5, 9, 10 and 25 operate regularly in both ways. Bus tickets are very cheap in Fuerteventura. To Morro Jable/Jandia it's approx. €2 per person. We recommend using the bus station at the main road (see map).
By taxi:
If you'd like to go back by taxi you first look for one of the larger taxi ranks (see map). A taxi ride to Morro Jable/Jandia costs about €17.
